In the design I'm using, the braces extend from the knee up the thigh about 9 inches. In my opinion, you really need to have a boat that you've used and fits well to model from if you're going to include them in the original construction like I did. Building deep thigh braces and then putting them in the wrong spot would defeat the purpose and make the boat uncomfortable. Deep thigh braces will also limit to some extent the ability of other paddlers significantly different in physical stature to use the boat. For example, I'm not sure that my paddling instructor will be able to fit in the boat when I'm done - it will be very snug for him. ;)
