I have been building a S&G Pax 18 and have the hull done and front and rear decks installed,sanded and ready for glass and epoxy.This boat has a piece of mahogany that goes right down the centre of the decks from front to rear called a kingplank and the right and left deck panels glue to it leaving a 1/2 inch or 12 millimetre solid mahogany strip exposed.It looks nice as is but I decided to put decorative inlay here as this board is a focal point on the deck and just begging for special treatment.I just purchased from Lee Valley 5 metres of very intricate,beautiful and expensive veneer called Buffard banding featuring delicate inlays of exotic woods for making fine furniture. It was manufactured in Paris France 60 to 90 years ago and the company went into receivership in the 30's ,leaving the leftover stock in storage for decades until Lee Valley bought it up.It is less than a millimetre thick and 20 mill wide so I will carefully chisel and sand a groove so it sets in a little bit proud.The instructions mention hide glue,fish glue or water and glycerine to bond it down.Does anyone have experience with this,will the glues used in the 20's or 30's react with MAS slow cure.Would you glue it down with thickened epoxy ,carpenters glue or something special?Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I must get it right the first time.
