: I decided to use the carpenters glue after reading a couple of Lee Valley
: tech bulletins, they said glue down and cover with varnish or whatever
: clearcoat you put on your furniture.I cut the groove by scoring the edges
: with a sharp blade
: and then a sharp delicate chisel.Left it a bit proud in order to sand the
: kerf marks from the saw blade and fair it out a little. When I'm done the
: whole deck will be covered with 4 oz cloth and resin but I wonder if I
: should precoat the strip with epoxy to make sure the small gaps along the
: edge are properly filled
: and to avoid small voids that could trap air bubbles under the cloth.

Bert, I have only built one boat so there is a lot more knowledge from others then I have. Since your veneer seems to be very valuable I would be careful and maybe try some test pieces. But on my boat I pre-epoxied the wood before I glassed to help fill any voids and also not to have any dry glass or void bubbles. The epoxy fills the voids and just looks like a black line. Pretty.

Why inlay at all? Surface mount and sand.
