: Hey Everyone,
: Well I'm about ready to buy boards to make my own strips. I have been looking
: at the "inland red cedar" at Lowes. It seems reasonable in
: price.
: The boards they have though all measure about 13/16 to 7/8 thick. Does this
: mean that in order to be useable they would have to ran through a
: thickness planer? I think I need to stick with mostly 3/4 in thick. I will
: also need some 1/2 thick for narrower strips. So how does everyone come up
: with the correct thickness boards?
: Thanks for any advice, Kurt
hi Kurt;
if you are planning on bead and cove strips you can set up your router table to cut all your strips to uniform width on your first pass (cutting the bead). set up so that the strip passes between the cutter and the fence. the cutter will remove any excess material. all my boats to date have been built with salvage lumber and this was the system i used before i bought a thickness planer.
if you are not planning on bead and cove you can still use your router as a thickness planer after you cut your strips. use the same setup with a straight cut router bit.
hope this is helpfull;
