not sure how you'll be doing it, but if you make the toggle like 3in long cylinder it'd be sorta like putting battery in a battery pack. if the magnets were at each end of the toggle then only one of the cups would be relieved at the top so you'd get like a snap in. even could wind the line(webbing) around the toggle. tight fit, small loop of line(web probably best)left up to pull all out.

hehehe,
then if the compass was screwed, you'd just lift up the toggle by its frictionless line and IT would become the compass.
