: Do you think with its penetration, it might make the boat 2 lbs. heaver?

Probably. But if you put on a seal coat before glasing it penetrates partway into the wood and leaves a measurable thin film on the surface. If not, your first wetout coat penetrates partway into the wood and you save only the thin film that would otherwise have formed.

The CPES soaks into the pores of the wood, but does not fill all those spaces. Think of it as coating the inside surfaces of all those hollow wood fibers, leaving dead airspace in the middle. Then again, since it's only 50% solids, half of what you put on will evaporate away. I put 4.5 oz. on a 25 oz. paddle, bringing it up to a little over 27 oz. If the same ratio holds, a 35 lb. boat would use 4.9 lbs of CPES aftr solvent evaporation. The ratio will not be the same though, because the paddle is thicker than the strips and will drink more material. Offset that number by the weight of the epoxy it replaces, and you probably are right in the ballpark at 2 lb. So, how much is it worth to you to know that your boat won't rot if you ding it on the rocks and water gets into the matrix of the cedar? 2 lb. doesn't sound like much of a penalty.

There is another advertising claim that I can't verify independently, but here it is FWIW. Epoxy is made out of phenol, which comes either from coal tar or wood tar. Coal tar is cheaper and far more plentiful, so that is where most epoxy comes from. Coal tar based resins tend to be more brittle than wood tar based resins. CPES claims to make their resin out of the more expensive, more flexible wood tar resin. Therefore the boat, paddle or whatever is able to flex more without breaking, being strong but not brittle. Again, that is an advertising claim and I always take those with a grain of salt. If true, it's a small plus. If not, it isn't enough of a minus to tip the scale against it.
