I started to build a permanent compass mount and then decided on a removable one that clips to deck lines with bungee cords. I don’t like the black compass sitting out in the hot summer sun ore getting dinged up when not in use. Frankly there are lots of times when I really don’t need it and I would rather not have it kick up spray.
When I am doing a crossing that requires navigation or there is potential for fog I just clip it on and go. I got the idea from some commercial ones but I liked the look of a Mahogany base that contoured around my deck.
I made the base by cutting a disk with a whole saw minus the pilot drill. I Then taped 60 grit paper to the deck and rubed the base over it to contour it to the curve of the deck.
