Those marquetry inlays are made of 1mm thin covering f'am right.
Consequently they should be supple and bend easily.
I assume the best way is to lay them once the bottom, stronger, structural strips have been glued in place.
The center area of the marquetry panel is more difficult to reach with C-clamps.
One trick is to hold a plank or stringer athwartships and hold each end of it with two or four clamps on both sides.
Those inlays must be sanded with the lighter grip before varnishing or epoxying.
Sometimes one strip can be more shallow than the next one, especially when they are cut from different trees.
The state-of-the-art method is to make for that by cutting the bottom strips thinner or thicker according to what is needed.
If the difference between upper covering strips is very small, one may sand them all down.
Of course inlay decorations can be home made, figuring a landscape, our house, etc.

My two €Cents.

: I too have considered using an inlay strip. I assume you would glue it to a
: thinner strip so that it would lay flush. Has anyone tried this. My
: concerns would be sanding through it when fairing the boat.

: Also I wonder how flexable the strip would be with the inlay glued to it and
: if it could follow a curve.
