: One thing I did just learn on wood restoration.com from Steve Smith (owner,
: inventer, head cheese). In his technical information report he states that
: tests show CPES will penetrate 2" on end grain and {ONLY} 1/32"
: on side grain. If this "inventor" and "tester" of CPES
: says his product will only seal the first 1/32" of the side grain of
: raw wood in the application we are most interested in .... Then I cannot
: see that it (with all the other unknowns) is WORTH IT ! I mean it seems to
: me that the "Clear Coat" will penetrate the side grain that far
: (1/32"). Am I missing something with this figure in his research? Why
: bother using CPES if it's penetration is (according to the
: "inventor") only 1/32"?
I was surprised by that too. The side grain of my WRC Greenland stick drank the stuff up within seconds. Severne watched it, was quite amazing really. Maybe Mr. Smith (to his credit) believes in the "Under-Promise but Over-Deliver" school of business marketing philosophy. IMHO his claim is extremely conservative. In my homegrown side by side comparison with S3 Clear Coat, there was no comparison. CPES dove right inside the grain on Doug fir, and CC lay on the surface with very little penetration. I found that CC was really good at wetting out 4 oz. S-glass, a pretty tough job indeed, but it has nowhere near the penetrating ability of CPES into the wood fiber.
