That isn't much of a surprise, given the fibrous nature of wood. The cellulose fibers act like tiny long straws, and capillary action transports fluids long distances in such conditions. Other factors are at work too, but it is largely capillary action that supplies the top of 300' trees with sap, after all. The lignin that binds the fibers together is relatively impervious to liquid water.

The best that we can hope for, and what CPES apparently does, is go anyplace that water can go in the wood, encapsulate the walls of the fibers, and prevent the moisture content from reaching levels high enough for fungus spore germination. If CPES doesn't go sideways, then water doesn't either. That is an oversimplification of course; over time either one will find other pathways, but the path of least resistance will always be longitudinal.
