Chip,

It looks useful to me, but would a shoulder plane in the 1" or so width do what you want, or do you require the width of the block plane? If you want to go even wider you could use a carriage makers plane or a stanley 289 with a skew blade. I bought the 289 without a fence on ebay, and retrofitted a fillister plane (current mfg.) fence for mine. Aren't planes fun! - Scott
