I didn't epoxy or varnish mine. Works well and has kind of a salty look to it. Seamen traditionally have practiced tying elaborate knotwork on long voyages... There must be an endless variety of Turk's Heads. Pick an easy one and set aside an hour or two to figure it out and get good ones tied. Get a knot book at the Public Library.
