: I just do this at work on my lunch.

That is called self control.

: Your gouging will probably always be a problem when your work piece contact
: area is wider than your plane iron. However, if you round off the corners
: of your iron, you will eliminate the step caused by the corner of the
: iron. The iron's corner then can be adjusted up into the sole of the plane
: and will not gouge.
: The other option is to get a plane wider than the work piece contact area.
: Hope this makes sense.

That makes sense, I've only had that problem when I was too lazy to sharpen the proper tool for the job. I guess the whole idea of using a rabbet plane for broader applications doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't think I would round the corners of my 3110 blade; I'd rather train myself to use it properly. It's amazing how quickly you learn when the consequences mean days of extra work :) The 3110 gouging came in real handy for carving this detail on my paddle (below). I shaped the whole transition using the Clifton 3110.

Hey, I just ordered the Lie-Nelson beading tool #66... I'm not addicted, I'll be done after my next one: the new Clifton #4 :D
