I'm with Pete on this one. It's very easy to use the rail as the template. I used "Ez-Point Studs" from Aircraft Spruce & Speciality that were designed to be epoxied directly to the boat which kept the rails as close to the hull as possible. I just put some clear packing tape on the back of the rail, put the studs into the rail, and glued them in place. Very simple. :)
