Keep the gun at least a foot back from the strips and keep it moving. You want to heat it, not cook it. Also try wetting the strip in the area that your heating with a wet rag or get a spay bottle. Let it soak in. It will help to keep the wood from getting singed and aids a little in "internal" steaming as the heat is applied
