This is the home built rack and you can see the bent metal pieces holding the rack to the car. A bolt goes through the top of the bent metal piece and through the wood side rack at a 45 degree angle. When this is tightened it pulls the rack down tight to the roof. I bought the Yakima saddes off of e-bay. The cross bars are thick walled conduit pipe, 1 1/8" outside dia. if I remember right and coated with black rubber dip.
