The pry-out variety work well, too. Betsie Bay Kayak uses them pretty much exclusively, although you can get a VCP hatch if you like. Make sure you put a pinhole-sized vent in your bulkhead, though, to equalize pressure. Apparently one owner of a Betsie Bay kayak had his on his roof upside-down in on his roof rack. When it was sitting in the hot sun, the lid blew off with enough force that it cracked the guys' windshield. You don't have to worry about them coming off in waves -- they're a tight press-fit with an O-ring around the perimeter, and water just washes right over the top. West Marine carries (or can get) these hatches for you.
You might consider attaching a tether of some sort to the underside of the lid to keep it from wandering off on you, too.
I plan on using these pry-out Becksons on my next yak (next winter), only I'm going to mount them under the deck with the cut-out of wood glued to the lid for a flush wood hatch...

: Does anyone have any pros/cons of the different style Beckson deck plates
: (screw in/pop out)? I'm planning on using them and just wondered.
