I don't think that you have an issue. We know that the 4 oz layup is sufficient for strength. The main concern are those submerged "shit happens" and if you want to run your boat onto the beach. For these instances the extra glass is good. The overlap is not an issue in this case.

I you want maximum structural strength, the load transfer ratio is ~1:50 (glass) ~ 1:100 (carbon) in fiber direction, i.e. a 6oz layer is ~0.2 mm thick, thus an overlap of 10 mm for fiber glass is all you need.
