I think I've seen what your friend is referring to, and it's not really a "study" and no "testing" was done. It's simply a chart that estimates efficiency based on a simple length-beam ratio. It's used to determine what racing class a given boat falls into. I don't have the URL handy, but I'll see if I can find it.
