In Response To: Seeking: advise about dry suits. (steve pollack)

Last Saturday we did what was supposed to be an "introduction to winter paddling" in Gloucester, MA. Well, there were these really neat rock gardens and a 2'-3' swell and...

The upshot is that three people got in over their heads and came out of their boats, and we had to do three "real" rescues in rock/surf conditions in 40 degree water. All thee paddlers were in the water for several minutes, as we had to tow them away from the rocks before we could get them back into their boats. All three had on dry suits (we require them on winter trips). All three stayed warm and dry. All three got back in without problems. All three were none the worse for wear after their swims.

To put it in the current vernacular: DRY SUITS, ROOL, DUDE!

Seriously, this really pointed out to me how valuable GOOD immersion protection is (and also the value of throwable tow rigs). My suggestion is buy a quality waterproof/breathable drysuit and fleece to wear under it. You will never regret it. Around here, Kokatat is the dominant brand, but I find that Stohlquist suits fit me better (I'm on the thin side).

One of our paddling contingent just received a suit from Ravenspring in the UK and it's VERY impressive for the price. The salient features are:

- The zipper and seals are covered (very nice neck closure)
- the suit was custom cut to fit him
- the manufacturer added elastic "gathers" in the back to keep the fit close (less air to purge), but allow for freedom of movement
- there were pockets on one thigh and one shoulder
- it had a relief zipper
- it had latex booties
- it was made from a waterproof/breathable fabric (not Gore-Tex)
- all for under $500!

Prior to receiving this suit, he had been using his coated nylon diving drysuit. He reported there was a HUGE imporvement in comfort and breathability with the new suit, so apparently the fabric works as advertised. He also bought their underwear, which is cut to be comfortable in a sitting position and reported that it was very comfortable.

When the day comes that my "Stoly" gives up the ghost, I'll probably give Ravenspring a call.
