: OK, my S&G Guillemot hull is done (less varnish) and I'm ready to start on
: the strip deck. A few problems are in front of me. I'm going to modify the
: offsets from Nick's book for the Guillemot to match my hull. Width doesn't
: seem to be a problem 'cuz I can scale it in AutoCad to the new numbers
: but, height is a bit confusing because I don't have a 0,0,0 reference on
: the hull and the shear on the hull isn't consistant with the shear on the
: strip plans. I have no common vertical reference point to start with.
: How can I find a vertical reference point on the boat and xfer it to the
: strip plans so I can determin the new shear location on each form? I do
: not plan on using a strong back at all. I was going to hot glue the forms
: to the hull for suport and use the hull's shear as my aqlignment mark (and
: to ensure the deck will fit the hull)
: I've been thinking about this problem ever since I started lofting the hull
: and I have no real solution other that the "FitsIt" measuring
: system, a dozen cardboard forms and one eyeball.
: Any ideas, tricks, solutions or oversights?
: Thanks much

Although I have'nt yet built a full size version of the S&G Guillemot,
I have built several models ranging from 3 feet to 5 feet, also with
stripped decks. The free downloadable plans from Guillemot include
offsets for temporary forms (every 20") with the chine and sheer locations.
I don't think you need to modify the strip guillemot offsets, you just need
to shape the tops of these forms to the desired deck shape. Since I am also
an Acad draftsman I scaled these forms down to fit my model sizes.
I don't care much for the peaked deck, so I used 16" radius fore and
24" radius aft of the cockpit. I hope to do the same on the full-sized boat.
I am currently stripping the deck of my wife's Chesapeake 16, but as
soon as I'm finished, I'll start on the Guillemot hull. Since I started
studying wood kayaks, I have thought that stripped deck/stitch&glue hulls are
the only way to go. You end up with the best of both worlds - beauty of a strip built kayak with the ease of a stitch&glue.
I would like to thank Nick for the plans, for his excellent book, and for this forum, and to all of you who contribute to it.
