I have used 18 gauge Copper Wire for all of my S&G kayaks. I found it available in rolls at my local hardware store It's also available from Chesapeake Light Craft. On average I used lengths of 4 inches. A 1/16 inch hole drilled 5/16 inch from the edge was quite adequate. I spaced my wires at 3-inch intervals.
