Louis,,you pretty much answered your question, they are made of different materials. The biggest difference is that the wood one is made by you. For the most part plastic is heavier, cheaper and more durable right off the shelf. All the other composite types are usually lighter and more expensive. There are too many variable to make worthwhile generalizations. Getting a cheap maneuverable plastic boat is a fine idea and getting together with folks that paddle is equally worthwhile. If you were to buy anything it might be a lesson in kayaking, if that's not available then a medium priced pfd and paddle. Let everything else follow.
