: . . . If I split
: the hull at the forward bulkhead, I get sections of 2.25 and 3.25m,
The forward bulkhead is not the only place where you can split the boat. You'll cut out lots of building forms, which typically get placed a foot apart (about 300mm) along the length of the boat. You could split the boat near any one of these points, and then use either the building form, or a copy of it, for your bulkhead. The shape would already be determined. It might be more convenient if you did not split the boat in the cockpit area, but it would not be impossible to do so. If you cut about 1.5 m off of each end would you be able to stuff one of these smaller pieces into the cockpit during shipment? Then you'ld still ship two pieces, but one would be carrying the third part in kangaroo fashion.
: I believe are small enough to go as hold baggage on scheduled flights.
Check and check and check again on this. Call several airlines and a few travel agents -- and remember that things are subject to change at the whims of some government ministry, or airline policy.
: But is it a feasible proposition ?
Yes.
:I'm interested to hear of any experience,
: particularly with regard to
: a) how to do it
: b) weight penalty
: c) strength compromises
: d) problems with alignment / surface finish - extra drag etc.
Erez's site does a nice job of describing how he did it. Strength should not be compromised at all, alignment is handled by having plenty of connecting bolts. weight penalty is probably around 8 pounds per slice. With Erez's boat he made two cuts, so I'd guess it added about 15 pounds.
Good luck with your project. Measure twice, cut once.
