I think it's quite possible to built up a foam structure around the pump to serve as a very servicable footrest. In my case, that would be 3 or 3.5" of foam. While it would certainly work, I wanted something without *any* give - I need all the advantages I can get to help with my roll.

On the other hand, building up foam would help reduce the amount of water that would need to be pumped out if you did wet exit. Either way has it's advantages. Please keep us posted as you get closer to launch. I'll be interested to see what ideas you add to the mix.

By the way, don't forget to review Shawn's suggestion (http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi/read/58406) regarding the discharge tube. IMHO, he's got a great suggestion.
