Save your time for something else.

A built up 2x3.5 beam will sag about as much as a 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 "two by four" There may be some differences in grain direction and stiffness when you compare plywood to a board, but they are still wood, and still have a 3.5 inch cross section.

A well supported 2x4 is all you need to get started. If it sags, support it better.

Spend the time on building a few supports for the middle of the strongback. These can be simple add-on legs. Even a short length of 2x4 clamped to the strongback and adjusted with wedges on the floor under it. Or, you can build an extra sawhorse or two.

No one sets a limit on how many feet you cna have under the strongback. Put on as many supports as you wish. And remove them when you have to strip over the area they occupy.

After you have a half dozen to a dozen strips glued on, your forms will start to stiffen from the additional bracing the partially-built hull provides. By the time you finish stripping the bracing of the strongback is irrelevant. The hull is now strong enough and stiff enough to support its own weight.

So spend your time on getting the boat started.

You'll be on the water a bit sooner.
