: Hi,
: I am also a newbie. I am also about to start a project on a pair of Great
: Auks (check out my question posted regarding length of strips to go the
: whole length). I don't trust that an ordinary 2X4 will remain straight. So
: I am building up a strongback out of a material called variously: partical
: board, flakeboard, or fiberboard. Imagine taking coarse-grained sawdust
: and glue and compressing the hell out of it. It is often used as
: underlayment for floors. It's also extremely dense and impossible to warp,
: tends to be stiffer than ply. Do not confuse it with what I call beaver
: board, which is made up of compressed chunks of wood and glue.
: The stuff I'm using is 3/4 inch thick.
: Good luck,
: Bill

Think the "particle" board or "flake" board referred to here may be "MDF" medium density fiberboard. It is much higher quality (and sligtly {50%} more expensive) than regular particle board and could be good if laminated for this purpose.
