Hi,

I have just gone through this myself. I started with a 2x4 but found that this just had two much of a twist for my liking so I chucked it away and built a 2x4 from a sheet of plywood like explained in Nick's book.

When I got this onto my stands, I found that although it did not twist or sag (to any great degree), I found that the stands could themselvs make the beam bow in the horizontal plane if they where not 100% aligned to each other. One small kick with my foot as I went past and the whole thing went out of line.

This was causing me a LARGE amount of frustration, so I decided to screw the stands to the floor. This made a large difference, to the alignment and my peace of mind, and I found I could sleep easier at night. I suspect I have the world record for the slowest form setup, I spent almost three weeks (on average 5 hours a day !!!!) just doing this part ! I ended putting all the forms on, then taking them off again, then on again, then off again ...

In responce to one of my earlier posts, Jack Sanderson wrote:

"Interestingly my experience was that many of the things that seem crutial really are not and a few that seem unimportant really are. The trick is understanding the difference"

This doesn't help a great deal, but at least I knew I wasn't alone :o)

Good luck
/Ian
