I used a 2x4 to build a Guillemot. I had no problems at all with it, but I think it is important to bring it into your workspace a couple of weeks ahead of time and let it sit and dry out, if it shows no sign of warping by then, it should be fine. I think an internal strongback of plywood would be just as good. Also, take the time to build the stands shown in Nick's book, they will support the 2x4 in 4 places and do not get in the way at all of you working.
Avoid particle board like the plague.
