Wow ! What a lot of fuss. I used a 2"x4" internal strongback (just like in
Nick's book) on a kayak only 14' long, so the strongback was only 12'. The
big problem was that it was *so* heavy. Every time I needed to move the kayak
during construction it was really unwieldy and this seems more likely to
cause damage than having a slight flex on the 2x4, especially once you've
got a few strips on. My next kayak will be a 5.5m one, and I'm seriously
thinking of going with well-supported square PVC down pipe, otherwise I won't
be able to pick the boat up until it comes off the forms ! In fact, I'm not
even sure I could move the 2x4" on its own :-(

External strongback ? Well, if I'd read "Kayakcraft" before I started building
my first kayak, I would never have started. Building that sort of strongback
simply looks beyond me - even though I am quite happy with the rest of the process. Similarly, I'd never dream of trying to build a hollow internal strongback out of plywood. Nah - much harder than stripping :-)
