If you don't want to make a wood one, you could surface mount a "luggage" handle. The link below is the only place I've yet to find them. They are the same type of handle you will find surface mounted on Perception kayaks and lots of other fiberglass kayaks. They are also the same type of handle that Whetstone uses on their spray skirts. They cost $3 each. In actual use, I like them better than a toggle on a rope, but a wood toggle sure is pretty. If you decide to go with a toggle and either don't want to make a wood or need something in the interim, try: (1) a short length of 5/8" black fuel line (just run the rope through it and tie a knot on either side so it stays put); or the plastic handle off of a $2.00 ski boot carrier.
