Just finished sprucing up mine. I wet sanded with 400g and added 4 layers of varnish, sanding with 800g between. I did 4 layers since I only had 3 on previously which wasn't enough for long term protection. The varnish covered all the scratches. The only damages showing are some ding marks that are smaller enough not to worry about. I was amazed at how much damage the varnish covered.
