: Does anyone have an opinion as to the the minimun length for an open water,
: worthy kayak? Specifically, is 14' too short of a kayak for the wife?

I've built a Kodiak SOF 14' - very good all round kayak , normal cruising speed is the same as longer boats. Lighter in weight than a longer kayak , good storage room. Doesn't pound as much in choppy sea as a longer kayak.
14' Length is a very good length , with a beam of about 25" , 2" of rocker, multi-chine and short overhangs - you will like it.
