the short length request may make it hard to achieve your tracking needs.

I'm guessing that you want to keep it short because of the transport issues.
If that is the case my suggestion would be to get more confortable with the rack and tie down possibilities.

The Mill creek 16 should fit your needs and traveling with it on an Escort
shouldn't be a problem if done correctly.

Why take a kayak plan and try to alter it if there is a design available.
