:I prefer synthetics
: wherever possible, and had thought back to m airplane-buiding days and
: using ceconite or shrinkable dacron. The heaviest I can find is 3.7
: ounces, fine for a bird but I shudder to put it on a kayak. Anyone know of
: some good sources?

Dyson Baidarka in Bellingham is a good source for fabric and coatings for the one- off builder. He also sells plans, aluminum tubing, cordage and other kayak building supplies.

If you ask, you can get small swatches of the different fabrics. There might be a small fee for this. He has some very substantial polyester (dacron?) fabrics .
also, if you are interested in coating with hypalon, he can supply this, too.
Have you read his book? "Baidarka"
hope this helps
