Hi Patsy. Wood tears out. You may be able to mitigate the effect with the other good suggestions (better support, more teeth/inch on blade) but you may not be able to get around it. My first boat is Okoume. I cut all the panels ~1/4" proud and planed them to the line with a block plane (see attached picture). It takes longer but that's the world we live in :)
