The boat does turn when leaned but doesn't seem to require much lean to facilitate a turn. The way I interpreted Winters "neutral helm" comment was that maximum lean effect happens at around 10 degrees and doesn't change much beyond that. So far that's been my experience, one of the first things I tried when I got in the boat. It takes very little lean to just about spin the boat and, remarkably (to me), it also tracks at least as well as my Tern (better in wind), not quite as stiff as my Storm. I need to lean my Storm to do a well-executed turn, something I expected based on Vaclav's design notes.
: I suppose "puzzling" isn't quite exact; it's the design's
: uncoupling of the typical connection between roll and yaw, remaining
: helm-neutral at roll angles beyond 10 degrees. As a well-read but lightly
: experienced newbie, it seemed this would produce a different feel from the
: typical kayak, which tracks when level and turns when leaned. Although,
: come to think of it, Nick does mention in one of his pages that he
: specifically worked on the ability to steer without heel in his designs
: also. Regardless, it sounds like the result works well!
