Cutting scarfs in plywood with a nice, sharp block plane is a lot of fun and rather rewarding. It's easy to do, as you can see the colored bands in the ply and use them to ensure that your scarfs are even. You can stack panels and cut several scarfs at once (it's actually easier this way). You need the plane anyway, so you may as well get the feel for it while scarfing.
