I have just about completed my GA so take my advise with a grain of salt. I cut all of my strips with a bandsaw. When I cut them, I would plane the new surface on the edge of the board. That left me with one smooth strip side and one rougher one. I put the rough one on the outside of the boat since I would be fairing it more anyway. this worked well.. the inside was smooth and did not require much smoothing. However, it takes me 3 minutes for each strip with planing. That is longer than it would take on the tablesaw. Were I to do it again, I would use a table saw with a 7 1/4 blade thin kerf.
With the bandsaw, I was able to make use of some very warped lumber by following the curve. I saved lumber, but not time. I like to use a scarf joint and 2 pieces to make each full length. I would not bother with those long warped pieces again. These are my opinions... each saw has its advantages, so why not look past the kayak and see which saw you would use for other projects. Hope this helps - Scott
