In Response To: Seeking: Outfitting ideas for crabbing... (Scott Ferguson)

: I'm just looking for ways to go out crabbing (with rings or pots) from a
: kayak in or near Chuckanut Bay near Bellingham, WA. I would be interested
: in hearing any opinions on a single, possibly retractable, pontoon or any
: other ideas for stabilization while pulling up the pots. One of the kayaks
: that I would attach such a devise to is my nearly completed strip decked
: Chesapeake 16. I hope to have some photos up soon. Thanks.

I fish out of my Guillemot Expedition here in the coastal swamps of LA. I catch redfish and specks more than anything else. "Man dats good eatin yeah". When I land one I simply run a stringer through his mouth and gills then toss overboard so it/they remain alive till I return to dock. Well not any more. The stringer overboard that is. Seems the blood attracted a gator who had eyes for an easy meal. Luckly I spotted the approaching critter before he got to em'. I shutter to think of how quickly I'd have gone over once he grabbed that stringer and started tugging. He'd have probably been as startled as I would have been and quickly exited the area, but many a startled/threatened animal has reacted aggresively when surprised.

I keep thinking about hungry sharks looking for an easy meal of crab. Their sense of smell and agressiveness makes many shark species a greater potential danger than any gator ever was.

Just something to think about.
