: Hey,I'm building the Guillimot Double out of Nick Schade's strip-built book.
: It's tons of fun, and going great. I'm just about finished stripping the
: hull. My next step is the deck, and I'm not sure where to put the two
: cockpits. I've looked everywhere in the book for specific locations but
: haven't found them. Has anyone built this one and have an answer?

: thanks

Hi Gary
The placement can vary depending on weight distribution and distance between paddlers. Other thoughts about placement may be for cosmetic purposes and storage space.

I calculated the placement based on the front paddler being 30lbs lighter than the back. Based on this, the front cockpit position was shifted an additional 8" forward. The notes that I have from when I built my Guillemot Double indicates the ceter of balance is 126" from the bow. From this position I calculated the cockpit placements. The center of mass of the front person was calculated to be 50" ahead of the CB and the center of mass for the rear person 42" behind the CB. Keep in mind that a persons center of mass is about 15" ahead of the back of the cockpit (at least thats what I figured at the time).

The cockpits where 32" long.

You could certainly move the cockpits closer together. One of my criteria was to have a center storage space at least 3' long from center bulkhead to back of front seat.

You can make your own calculations based on a simple ratio. with W1 and W2 being the weights of the paddelers and x1 and x2 being the distance from the center of balance for the center of mass for each person.

x1W1 = x2w2

If you plan on equal weight of each paddeler, then the center of mass of each person would be equal distance ahead of and behind the center of balance of the kayak.

I think I may have altered these original calculations when I built mine do to cosmetic purposes. The main one being the rise of the deck up to the front cockpit opening. I will go out and make some measurements tomarrow and let you know if I changed them from my original notes.

Hope this gets you stared in the direction you where looking for.

Tom
