My crarrying loops are different than what you describe,
but they do come out thru the deck, & not thru the hull.

although the attached image shows the 3-pieces, you can also see where
the carrying handles are positioned in relation to the bow & stern.
the handles are made of a former broom stick, & are shown in the
"handles" link.
