In Response To: Off Topic: SPAM from WetDawg? (Shawn Baker)

: Anyone else get spammed by WetDawg? I got it on the account I post for this
: BBS.

It is possible that the SPAM list was pulled from this BBS.

The BBS script is designed to not transmit the email addressess to robots and spiders. But that doesn't stop robots or spiders from pretending they are regular browsers. It also doesn't stop a determined person from browsing and copy/pasting addresses.

The system does work for honest sites like Google. If you do search such as http://www.google.com/search?as_q=epoxy&as_sitesearch=kayakforum.com

you will see that the "cached" pages do not display the email address even though the "live" pages do.

To prevent SPAMers from harvesting from the BBS I could make it so the email addresses are never displayed. So for I have choosen to display the addresses so people can engage in off-line discussions more easily. Any opinions?

The choice is easy off-line discussions, or a rare possiblity of SPAM.

BTW, the John(NOSPAM)Doe@AOL -dot- COM system and its varients for foiling SPAMers primarily serves to send me a lot of "Returned Mail - Address Unknown" messages when those same people select "If you'd like e-mail notification of responses, please check this box: [ ]"

If you are going to use nonsense addresses, please do not select the email notification option. If you have the notification selected and you wonder why you aren't getting the notification, please check your email address.
