I am a newcomer to the kayak world, but I have been crabbing continuously since I moved to Washington last fall. Those crab pots get pretty heavy when they have a lot of line out above them, a lot of crabs in them, or both. They are pretty easy to pull over the side of my zodiac, but you would definately need some sort of outrigger to haul them onto a kayak without rolling over. I did find something neat today though, and it made me think of your post. In the Feb/Mar 2002 issue of Wave Length magazine (www.wavelengthmagazine.com) there is an article about crabbing that features a small crab pot called the "Jolly Good" trap made by Ray Surette of Ladysmith, BC (250-245-7407) for $50 CAN. It is 30 X 40 cm framed out of solid stainless bars and wrapped in fabric netting. As small and light as it is, it would probably be a lot easier to haul onto a kayak than a regular trap. It would probably even fold down and fit in a hatch to go along on your long adventures. With it's small size it could probably only hold 4-5 crabs at a time, but how many crab can you cook on your camp stove anyway?
