This kayak building stuff sure creates more questions than building a strip canoe! When I cut the opening for a recessed cockpit on the 14' Auk should the cut be plumb to the floor?,... beveled inwards to create a bit of a lip?... doesn't matter?.... The recess as I've drawn it will extend from the front to the midpoint of the cockpit sides, and then just a tad on the rear.
