Here is a pic of some of the kayak models I have made. These all still need the cockpit coaming and a coat of varnish. They are scaled down versions of kayaks designed by professionals. I prefer to build the hybrid style S&G hull and stripped deck. The small one is a CLC Chesapeake 16, the other two are Nick's S&G Guillemots. The one in the back is the largest and is about 4 feet long. It has a carbon fiber hull that will really shine with another coat of epoxy then some varnish (I do know, from discussions on this BBS, not to use carbon on a real boat, but it does look nice on a toy (Yes my youngest son (age 5) plays with these in the bathtub.
These boats are all made just like the full sized kayaks, with the exception of leaving in what my full sized boat has for temporary deckbeams. The deckbeams are placed every few inches and the strips are glued (epoxied) to them and the sheerclamps.
I like building the models because it gives me a realistic idea of what the full sized boats would look like and because it's good practice using the building methods for real boats. The other reason I build small models is so I can take them with me where ever I go. The small Ches16 was constructed on a beach on Gambier Island in BC with nothing more than a roto-zip, pocketknife, and glue. Nowadays I load up the toolbox shown in the back and build kayaks while visiting friends/family (vacations) or just while watching TV. I load up a few syringes with epoxy resin and another with hardener, and can accurately measure small batches (I use RAKA too).
My latest idea is to use these (or make more) as radio controled kayaks on the lakes around Bellingham where I live. See the next post of an RC Kayak drawing that I made based a bit on Roy Folland's Seawolf (a beautiful boat by the way).
Before I forget, I would like to thank Chip Sandresky for helping me post pictures. And for everyone else on this board for the things I have learned.
From a design standpoint, I don't ever want to be accused of stealing a boat design. I think that the designer deserves to be compensated for their work. Building these small display kayaks has been to this point from Chris's book "The New Kayak Shop", Nick's "The Stripped Built Sea Kayak", and from the free downloadable S&G Guillemot from the website. If anyone believes that building more than one of these is not right, please let me know. Thanks again to all.
