I find that using 2x6 rough sawn lumber is easier than using the 1 by lumber. Firstly, the 2x6 lumber tends to have fewer knots. This is how I proceed:
1st step: I rip the 2x6 at 1/4" strips. This gives me strips that measure approximately 1/4" by 1 7/8".
2nd. step: I rip these wide strips down the center.
3rd step: I rip the two pieces to just under 3/4".
The result: Strips are all the same width, same thickness and are S4S. Square four sides. I find that when running these through the cove and bead process on the router table, that I don't have trouble with a thicker or thinner strip flopping or hanging under the feather boards.
I know that this might seem like extra steps, but the results are worth it and when ripping through the 1/4" thickness, the last step, the strips cut like butter. I use a thin kerf combination planer blade that gives me an excellent finish, almost as if planed to size.
