where he clamps the 2 pcs in place butting, cuts back the top veneer on ea side abt 2-4 inches to some pattern or at least diagonal line, glues a contrasting pc of veneer back on w/ epoxy using a layer of glass in the glue up so its structural, mashing on a layer of glass below the joint too at the same time. clamps up all at once.

gets abt 2x the strength(2 veneer layers betw glass) of a spline but also obscuring those 90deg joints too.
