It's pretty compact and a version with bungees can be placed farther or closer as required by conditions. Removable so bearings can be taken and it need not be left on kayak if suspicious people are around. I've had mine (fixed model) far in front, and like the ease of readout and relatively small reading error due to distance and small angle of view. It does however not have the moving ring for setting the bearing (unless they've added one lately).
