: Hi John, I am curious about the jig you used to route your slots for the soft
: padeyes. I still need to put the slots in my guillemot and have been kind
: of putting it off
Tom - I don't have any pictures that are clear enough to be helpful. My jig looks alot like Joe's that Darren posted except I hadn't included a board on the fourth side. (Should have - just didn't think about it!) I made my base out of plexiglas which made it easy to position the jig. I cut my slots AFTER putting the hull and deck together - for a couple reasons. 1) I kept putting it off - I think this was the scariest part of the whole project; and 2) I put my slots about 1" up from the shear. I had added reinforcing patches on the underside of the deck, but I wanted to get my shear taped before cutting the slots.
As a result, I couldn't use clamps to hold the jig in place. 3M stock went up the day I did the slots. I put a very thin layer of neoprene on the bottom of the jig so it didn't slide around, and held the jig in place with strapping tape. Since I cut each slot twice - once 3/8" for an inlay of black epoxy, and once 3/16" for the slot itself - I did go through over a roll of tape. I think the biggest trick, however, is to beg, borrow, rent, steal... a laminate trimmer. It was so much easier to use than a full sized router for this job.
